Fashion Inspiration: Sailor Moon

My all time favorite superhero, well I should say superheroes. They break the barriers of the male dominated role of strength and power. I was obsessed with this as a kid. I loved space and looking at the stars. (Still do!) It was really something, the superpowers, costumes, and magic. I always knew superman, batman, and Spider man because they were always in the forefront, but this was different. Even if there are female superheroes, they are under command of a male or added in as a counterpart/love interest except for maybe wonder woman. Sailor Moon was quite a phenomenon on the 90’s. It started out as a comic in Japan turned into a television series, which I might add, was somewhat different. The show had less of a plot and emphasized on battling monsters to save the day whereas the comic had a focused storyline with less frequent fighting and finding the Silver Crystal along with figuring out their past of course with action in between! For those of you not familiar here is a basic synopsis of the comic:
The story begins a fourteen year old girl, normal teen someone could relate to daydreaming, eating, and procrastinating with studies. One day she steps on a black cat’s tail on her way to school. The cat, shortly revealed named Luna, can talk and gives a magic brooch which transforms her into sailor moon. Luna instructs sailor moon to find the silver crystal and the princess and to protect them. She finds her four remaining teammates, mercury, mars, Jupiter, and Venus. Along the way they repeatedly encounter the man in the mask who is also searching for the silver crystal. But alas there is one more contender for the crystal, the evil Queen Beryl who wants to reign the earth.
Eventually all the scouts discover they have been reborn on earth and the princess is sailor moon who has the crystal sealed away inside of her. It appeared from her tears as she wept for tuxedo mask who was at the edge of death. You’re probably thinking ‘well isn’t that obvious that sailor moon would be the princess?’ To the reader it may be evident but the characters are not aware of anything and only know that the role of sailor scouts is to protect the princess. Continuing on, sailor moon was the heir to the throne of the moon kingdom (silver millennium), Princess Serenity. She fell in love with the prince of earth (tux mask) though the earth and moon were not to be in contact with one another. The reason? It is not clear, but from inferences it maybe because the moon was far more advanced like an utopia. The Earthlings on the other hand were not the most peaceful people trying to battle their conscience between good and evil. It can be concluded (by me at least) that contact between earth and moon was prevented so that there are no attempts to steal the crystal to use it for evil purposes.
The people of earth eventually rebel with influence from an evil being from space that occupies a spot in the clouds. A war is waged against the moon. The prince is killed amid the destruction and the princess serenity in grief stabs herself. Her mother, the queen, in deep despair uses the silver crystal, giving up her life, to temporarily seal away the evil being, and have the soul of her daughter and loved ones reincarnated on earth with their powers where they will seal away the evil for good; begin a new life on a solitary planet. And that is where the series initiates, the 20th century with a girl in long pig tails. The story extends much further with too many details to summarize.
‘Civilian’

As a civilian, her style is cute, fun, and girly.

She is mostly seen wearing skirts and dresses. Her clothes will have prints, patterns with some sort of feminine detail. Shoes will range from simple flats to low heels. As for jewelry, pearls are a must considering they are her birthstone and a heart necklace to signify her purity and goodness. A moon pendant can be added to pay homage to her alter ego.
School Uniform
This is something casual that can be worn on any day. This has the basic components, blue skirt (Can add blue shorts or pants) , white top, black shoes, and any bow detail. You want to stick with similar colors.
Sailor Moon
The uniform consists of a pleated skirt, sailor collar, bows, gloves, boots, and head ornaments.
Real world alternatives to create a similar silhouette: White shirt with collar, blue pleated/tiered skirt, bow necklace, short gloves, red heels, moon earrings, tiara shaped hair accessory. If you do not like to show your legs, tights/ leggings would be just fine just do not pair then with white because it will get overbearing. Pretty simple. There many ways to create this looks so play it up or play it down by adding/removing/exchanging accessories. You want to channel Sailor Moon not turn into her.
Super Sailor Moon
A new transformation in the middle of the series. Skirt, sleeve, and bow change.
This look is more casual and emphasizes on the overall lightness and fluttery aspect of the uniform. Take any white loose flutter sleeve top and pair it with a multicolored tiered skirt. You can layer three thin skirts or for the sewing savvy individuals take three different skirts, cut and stitch them together. But you can certainly find a single skirt containing the colors white, yellow, and blue. Get a belt with a heart shaped buckle. Put on a pair of red shoes. For the accessories, moon earrings, pearl hair clips, and, not pictured, a butterfly detail i.e. a necklace etc…
Eternal Sailor Moon
Uniform change during last part of series. More color. Puff sleeves. White shoes.
To emulate this look, take any white t-shirt with pink puff sleeves or any white t-shirt/tank and pair it with a light pink jacket/shrug with puff sleeves. For the bottom portion, get a three tier skirt or a single skirt containing the three colors in any fashion. Put on a winged heart accessory (necklace/pin), moon and star earrings, pearl clips, gloves, and white/neutral colored shoes. Downgrade accessories to make it casual.
Princess Serenity
This is her in her previous life.
Take any flowing white/off-white/pale pink/pearly dress. It should be short sleeves or sleeveless but not strapless. Pair the dress with a gold or silver necklace preferably with round accents. Wear any pearl hair accessory, pearl earrings. You can add a flower detail in the form of a ring but it is not necessary. As for the shoes they can range from satin white heels to shimmery flats.
Neo Queen Serenity
This is her future form as queen. It is like her princess dress but a little more sleek.
I show three different versions.
The basic components are a white dress with bodice, pearl earrings, white/silver shoes, and a butterfly accent. The first version is a short strapless dress with a detailed bodice. Add spiral earrings with a mini butterfly tiara. Finish off with white bow pumps. This could work for the princess version minus the crown.
Version two contains a mid length dress, pearl studded earrings, pearl/crystal headband, gold butterfly bracelet/cuff, and silver shoes.
The last version is more for a formal setting. It contains a full length gown, strapless with bodice, heart tiara, dangling earrings, simple white pumps. Add a butterfly accent.
this is so good! real-life sailormoon =) fantastic
